Academic success is a goal many parents want their child to achieve. However, throughout a child’s school years some difficulties may arise: failure to grasp basic skills, poor organizational skills, social issues and lack of wanting to progress to name a few. The service a tutor provides can be a solution to your problems, but how do you find the right one? A tutor that will enhance or correct your child’s learning skills resulting in a satisfied parent and better student can be found by keeping a few points in mind during your selection process.
- Ask your child’s teacher, friends and associates for tutor recommendations. Decide if you want to use a teacher, volunteer or student tutor your child. Then begin interviewing tutors comparing experience, rates, references and experience with specific grade levels and subjects they are offering to tutor.
- Ask about availability and scheduling, you want a tutor that will have the time to spend with your child. Lateness or missing an appointment all together can be avoided. You may want to perform your own background check for added assurance that the tutor you choose is the right one.
- Explain to your child why you are hiring a tutor and the results you want them to achieve though tutoring. This dialogue will open your child up to the idea of having a tutor.
- After selecting a tutor, go over the tutoring plan and set achievable goals with the tutor. As your child receives personalized teaching and guided practice, observer the tutor and your child interact. Check your tutoring plan as you all advance through sessions and reward your child for meeting planned goals. This will help motivate and build confidence in your child to apply what they have learned from their tutor.
